Is Distance Learning Right for You?

Those who attend class over the Internet or via a television course or video taped class are taking part in distance learning. In addition to online courses and instruction, those who take part in distance learning also participate via Internet bulletin boards and e-mail sessions. Television courses, of course, don’t offer the same flexibility as those taught online, but they do save time on your commute and you won’t have to sit in a traditional classroom.

Distance learning offers the same programming as traditional schools. You can enroll in one course, or matriculate if that’s your desire. It’s not unheard of to earn a degree by attending classes online or via a telecourse. Learning at your own pace, at a time that’s convenient for you, is sure to encourage productivity.

Since the programs are the same for distance learning as they are in a traditional classroom, so are the requirements. The only difference is the manner in which the material is brought to you. While this is certainly a convenient way to learn, it’s interesting to note many students do feel it takes longer when they don’t have a teacher in front of them to explain the material. Extra time may be needed to study the course work in depth.

To determine whether you’re a good match for distance learning, you might consider an assessment test. There are many such tests, such as this one: http://www.luzerne.edu/distancelearning/forme.asp, to be found online.

As with anything else, there are pros and cons of distance education. The benefits, of course, abound. The biggest benefit is the ability to work at your convenience. With the exception of courses only televised during certain hours, for the most part you can study anywhere there is an Internet connection.

Another benefit is the honing of such skills as writing and research. Since most of your communication will be done with your fingers, your writing is sure to improve. Your ability to read and absorb information, communicate, and search out information will only get better. You will find you’re becoming more articulate and descriptive in your writing.

If you’re someone who has difficulty participating due to shyness or poor social skills, distance education can offer the ability to take part in discussions and study sessions while remaining anonymous. You don’t have to worry about what others think, saying the wrong thing, or your personal appearance. While these should never be a factor when getting a good education, for some, they’re certainly a consideration.

Convenience isn’t everything, however. Many who enroll in distance learning find they miss the camaraderie a more traditional classroom setting has to offer. While social interaction is offered via bulletin boards and e-mail, this isn’t enough for many.

You’ll have to be easily motivated to partake in distance learning. You’ll be expected to handle the coursework on your own without succumbing to outside distractions. You’re on your own to complete assignments as there will be no one in front of you to offer reminders. You’ll also have to be an active participant. You’re going to have answer the questions posed in the study or assignment guide, rather than hope someone else is called upon.

If distance learning sounds like an interesting opportunity, check with your school’s admissions office to see if it’s available. You may find it’s a convenient alternative.
